HAWKSMOOR EDINBURGH

How do you expand a quintessentially London steakhouse brand into Scotland's cultural capital without appearing as another English chain colonizing local dining culture?

Hawksmoor needed a complete launch identity that would resonate with Edinburgh's proud heritage while maintaining the premium positioning that made them successful. Rather than simply rolling out existing brand elements, I developed a location-specific brand expression that honored Edinburgh's architectural and cultural heritage while maintaining Hawksmoor's luxury standards. The strategy required deep research into Scottish history to create authentic connections between the steakhouse concept and local pride.

Edinburgh residents take immense pride in their architectural heritage and cultural independence. The brand needed to feel like a respectful addition to the city's dining scene rather than an invasive London transplant. Success required demonstrating genuine appreciation for Scottish heritage, not superficial tartan-and-castle theming.

The biggest opportunity wasn't in competing on sophistication alone, but in authentically connecting Hawksmoor's steakhouse heritage with Edinburgh's own rich history. By anchoring design decisions in genuine Scottish heritage - from banking history to cattle society traditions - I could create local pride in the brand while maintaining premium positioning.

I developed a comprehensive launch identity anchored in the Royal Bank of Scotland building's architectural details and historical Scottish elements. Typography sourced from 1890s Scottish bank notes and advertisements created visual heritage that felt genuinely local. For the private dining area, I created a bespoke wooden artwork board showcasing "The Polled Cattle Society" - inspired by cattle society contests from the late 1800s, creating another deliberate connection to Scotland's agricultural heritage that reinforced the steakhouse concept's authenticity.

My work encompassed the complete launch ecosystem: menu covers using thermo blocking and foiling techniques that elevated the tactile experience, comprehensive menu design systems, business cards, opening soon postcards for pre-launch buzz, environmental signage, and the custom cattle society artwork for the private dining space. Each element maintained design coherence while serving specific functional needs for the market entry.

The impact

The location-specific approach successfully positioned Hawksmoor Edinburgh as a respectful addition to the city's dining scene rather than another London import. The design created local pride in the brand while maintaining consistency with Hawksmoor's luxury standards, enabling successful market entry that honored both the brand heritage and Edinburgh's cultural identity.
